How to cross stitch a black dog or cat
Black fur is rarely one flat black. A useful pattern preserves cool and warm grays, reflected color, eye highlights, and the silhouette around the ears and muzzle.
Start with side light
Choose a photo taken near a window or outdoors in open shade. Avoid crushed shadows. If the eyes are invisible in the photograph, conversion cannot reliably recreate them.
Lift brightness, protect contrast
Begin around brightness +6 and contrast +12 rather than pushing contrast to maximum. Too much contrast turns several dark shades into one black shape.
Use a contrasting background
Soft beige, pale blue, or muted green separates the outline better than a dark sofa or night scene. Crop away dark objects touching the head.
Edit identity features
After cleanup, restore intentional eye highlights and the brightest muzzle edges. These few cells often contribute more recognition than dozens of scattered fur colors.
