How many colors should a photo pattern use?
More colors do not automatically create a better chart. Each additional shade introduces another symbol, thread change, and opportunity for isolated stitches.
Practical starting ranges
- 8–12 colors: icons, silhouettes, simple gifts, graphic illustrations.
- 14–18 colors: bright short-haired pets and smaller portraits.
- 20–24 colors: the best general starting range for pet photographs.
- 25–30 colors: long fur, brindle coats, subtle dark or pale shading.
- More than 30: use only after confirming each extra shade adds visible structure.
Judge from normal distance
Compare versions at the physical size you plan to stitch. If two charts look nearly identical from arm’s length, choose the one with fewer colors.
Reduce colors before reducing size
If a chart feels too complex, first merge similar colors and remove confetti. Reducing the stitch width can erase recognizable facial geometry.
